I took Spanish through high school and four more years in college, then let it sit for two decades. Moving to South Florida made the gap obvious. CodeSplash Language is the app I built to bring that Spanish back, and it is now live in a private beta at language.codesplash.ai.
A chart, not a checklist
The home screen is a nautical chart. Every port is a textbook chapter: one tense, a themed vocabulary set, a set of phrases, a short history lesson, and the dialect feature of that region. The recommended course sails from Miami through Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico, then on to Mexico, Central America, South America, and finally Madrid and El Estrato, a post-course chapter on Latin roots.
The course is advice, not a rule. Nothing on the chart is locked. Open any chapter at any of its three tiers whenever you want.
Starts where you are
Most language apps assume you are starting from zero. This one does not.
The app starts by asking. When a word enters the queue for the first time, you answer one of three buttons: I can produce it instantly, I recognize it but cannot produce it, or I do not know it. That answer sets the word's starting point. Words you already own stay out of your way.
Spaced repetition that knows how you know a word
Scheduling runs on FSRS, and each card carries four separate memory states: recognizing the word, decoding it by ear, recalling it in writing, and producing it out loud. Knowing a word on sight does not hide that you cannot say it. Reviews target the weak state, and a three-button triage keeps the queue honest.
There are 63 exercise types across the course, from matching and cloze to open production, and every verb has full conjugation tables one tap from the card you are studying. Sentences are read aloud in Caribbean-accent neural voices, because that is the Spanish I actually hear.
Three rules
Three rules shaped the whole app.
Progress is what you can do on an exam. Chapter exams and sellos are the only measure.
Nothing is locked. Open any chapter at any tier.
No language model writes a Spanish sentence or grades an answer. Every sentence comes from openly licensed textbooks or real, attributed example sentences. Text-to-speech is the only synthetic part.
Exams and sellos
Each chapter has an exam at every tier. Pass it and a sello is stamped for that chapter on the chart. Seals are computed from the exam log, so they are earned as evidence and never handed out. An overall exam across the whole course produces a single score from 0 to 100.
